McDonnell XF-85 Goblin is a parasite plane. Built in the late 40s, only two ever existed. The prototype proved some concepts and wiped out a lot of ideas popular at the time. The plane flew, suffered some accidents and then got quickly retired after about a year. Nevertheless, Goblin remained in the history books and still is among the most recognizable weird-looking planes ever built. It looks like an egg-plane model, but it is not a model. It was an actual fighter jet. At least for couple of months.
It is not surprising that not many have approached the subject during the golden years of modeling. The Goblin is far from the glamour of the Phantom or the Mirage. Plain and simple – it looks fat. However, it is rather interesting modeling subject. With its special rig for ground transportation and hook for parasitic flight, XF-85 presents a lot of options for wonderful modeling ideas and representations. Its shiny appearance, typical for the era adds even more to the soup of options. Just imagine the metallic paints and their variations in scale!
Halberd Models released a render of XF-85 Goblin luckily. And the render, according to scalemates.com seems to cover two options – 32nd and 48th. Hopefully featuring different complexity according to the scale. But to be honest, we don’t know much of the 5 year old Ukrainian company and we have no idea what they are about to show up with. Besides, they are from a country currently at war, which raises additional questions like the reliability of the project news in the first place.
However Ukrainian modeling companies are working very hard and have proven that they are to be trusted. Even at the time of war. Plus the renders that Halberd released and that you see here are looking really great! Therefore our expectations lean towards the positive outcome of those news. Now, will the XF-85 Goblin will be made from resin or plastic, or maybe both – we have no clue. We expect resin. But whatever the case is, we hope that this will be a subject properly released and widely available, since by itself it is a great addition to any jet modeler collection.
