F-5E Freedom Tiger – Eduard’s Latest Limited Edition

F-5 Freedom Fighter is a cheap, reliable little jet, made for the small and rather poor countries. Northrop designed its initial variants in the late 50s, made it supersonic, twin-engine and highly agile. Besides becoming the spinal cord of the training military aviation in USAF, the plane became NASA’s favorite, as well as many aggressor units thanks to its potential. It served many different countries and it still serves to this day.

F-5E specifically, was a later version, which was introduced in 1972, but it is still very active today. Not many planes can sustain that kind of changing eras’ scrutiny and survive. F-5 Tiger /as it was also known/ managed to do that and thrive. Not only it is not retired, but it still flies very actively, mostly in the role of aggressor, fighting against F-16s, F-15s, F/A-18s and other behemoths of the 4th generation fighter trend. More important than anything else – it is still a hard nut to crack, even against those high-edge tech fighters.

In scale, AFV Club in 48th is probably the best option on the market, being also the most recent in that scale too. And as with the numerous real-life options of the Freedom Fighter, there is many kits released from AFV, including the notorious MiG-28 from the 1986 movie Top Gun. In their finest tradition, Eduard are about to improve all this, making a new Limited Edition kit  – #11182 – which will feature several options, based on the AFV Club tooling and spiced up by the Czechs additionally.

Eduard’s Limited Edition kits need no promotion or introduction. For many modelers they are “A Must Have”. Not because you can build all the options within, but because the kit itself is tailored perfectly. The options are numerous, and the plastic isn’t enough to cover them all, but the box, the packing, the combo itself – is like a dream come true. A true Super-kit. Eduard did it with Academy’s Phantoms, with their own toolings as well as lately – with Kinetic’s Vietnam Era F-104C Starfighter.

The boxart of Eduard’s latest big cat appeared just recently and as expected – it is beautiful. They never missed that opportunity. With that said, the options inside are even better. We’ll let the pictures tell the story here, but Eduard – in short – managed to present one of the very best within one set and swipe us off with one go. Not only that, but Eduard are planning second Limited Edition F-5 option, about which we can only fantasize at this point.

There are few standard Vietnam Era Camouflages, representing different Air Forces. We have several aggressors, Brazilian demo and new-age Thai camo schemes included. They all deserve their fair share of discussion, but again, let’s let pictures do the talking here. All those camouflages are probably applicable to the previous AFV Club releases and if one wants to utilize everything from this kit, it can serve mostly as a basis with its decals, plus the eventual need for aftermarket for other AFV toolings. However, we look at this kit as a gem in your stash more than anything else, because with a bit of research and aftermarket you can turn any of the previous releases from AFV Club into one of these mentioned above, without ruining the set as it is.

The whole pack on the other hand, won’t and cannot remain intact if you start building it. You have to pick one. Just one. And since Eduard makes this LIMITED in numbers, we are presented with a dilemma, should we build it or should we keep it and build around the idea of it. That means using AFV plastic from other kits instead. We know that there are opinions on both sides of this story, since this kit is a great investment from one side, but from another is a tempting joyride, which many will build the heck out of. And with all that said, we will leave the choice for you. Whatever the decision is, Eduard are about to release their next great pack, vivid, intriguing and capturing. Good job as always and highly appreciated too!

Be quick – it won’t be out there for long!
